Clotworthy House was built about 1843 by the 10th Viscount Massereene as a stable block for Antrim Castle, and it has been an arts centre since 1982. In 1993 a security guard heard noises from the locked building on five consecutive nights. For four nights he went to investigate and found it empty. On the fifth night he saw a figure standing in one of the rooms, and as he prepared to approach, it vanished.
The guard said he had been in this work for years and had sat in lots of deserted buildings at night, did not have an imaginative mind, and knew what he saw and heard. Some believe the figure was Ethel Gilligan, a nineteen-year-old servant who died in the fire at Antrim Castle in October 1922, whose form has also been seen in the gardens.
