Folklore & legend

The Last Monk of Arbroath and the Devil Rat

Arbroath Abbey

Early seventeenth century (as told)

Angus Folklore gives the story as a folk aside at the end of a post on a corrupt abbey official, and gives no archive reference. The rat story appears to be a legend accounting for the end of monastic life. The abbey is a major ruin in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.

Arbroath Abbey is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
