The Face in the Air at Bessbrook Mill

Bessbrook Mill, Derrymore Road, Bessbrook

Reports from the late 1990s to 2022

Bessbrook Mill was a linen mill that later became an army base, at one stage described as one of the busiest heliports in Europe. The military left in 2007 and the site has stood empty since. Stories of unexplained happenings are said to have circulated among personnel even while it was in use.

Spirited Isle gives two accounts, both involving a local photographer. In 2022 he reviewed photographs he had taken while documenting a strange fluorescent light that had come and gone in one of the mill windows for more than a decade. On close inspection he saw what looked like a disembodied human face hanging in the air, which he had not noticed when taking the picture.

The second concerns a photograph taken by a soldier in the late 1990s inside the old weaving shed, then used for military vehicles, showing a shadowy human shape. The photographer who was later shown it described it as a man walking across the room with his head bowed and hands in his pockets, as if wearing a coat. The entry itself allows that both images could be pareidolia or some environmental effect.
