The stories come from MacArthur's Antiquities of Arran (1861), quoted in a folklorist's survey of the island, which points out that no fairies are mentioned in them directly. Torrylin Cairn is a chambered cairn near Lagg on the south coast, and it is the likely place for the first tale, but the source gives only 'Torlin'. The site of Tor Castle is not identified in the sources read. Tales that warn of the danger of disturbing burial mounds were told across the Celtic countries and are recorded in many local histories.
