Ashbourne Town Hall

Market Place, Ashbourne

Town hall built 1861 on the site of the earlier Talbot Inn

Ashbourne Town Hall stands on ground with a longer and rougher history than its respectable Victorian civic architecture might suggest. The current building, put up in 1861, was built directly on the foundations of the Talbot Inn, a seventeenth-century establishment remembered locally as notorious, though the sources available do not specify exactly what earned it that reputation. Whatever character the older inn had seems to have carried through, in local storytelling at least, into the building that replaced it.

Reported activity at the town hall spans a genuinely wide range: footsteps heard in empty parts of the building, screams with no obvious source, disembodied voices, knocking sounds, doors that slam by themselves, and tall, dark shadow figures glimpsed in corridors and rooms. Alongside these more unsettling reports, visitors and staff have also described hearing children's laughter and singing with nobody present to account for it, a gentler note within an otherwise fairly intense set of reported phenomena. The building's haunted reputation is now actively used to host organised ghost hunt events, giving the public a chance to visit and investigate the site for themselves rather than the story remaining purely a matter of staff anecdote.
