The Station Hotel, Attercliffe

Attercliffe Common, Sheffield

The Station Hotel on Attercliffe Common did not start out as a single building at all. Three separate cottages once stood on the site before they were combined into the pub that later became well known enough locally to attract the attention of the television series Most Haunted, a level of scrutiny few of Sheffield's other haunted pubs have received. At the core of its reputation is a story of a man knifed to death inside the building during its earlier days as separate cottages, though accounts of the killing vary enough in detail from one telling to the next that no single, consistent version has ever settled into place.

A second, considerably more elaborate story circulates alongside the first, naming the victim instead as a servant girl called Elizabeth, said to have been murdered by the hotel's own manager and her body hidden in a beer barrel down in the cellar, with the manager later caught and hanged for the crime. The two versions sit awkwardly together, a stabbed man in one telling and a hidden servant girl in another, which suggests genuine cross-contamination between two originally separate local tales rather than a single coherent history, a problem common enough with pub ghost stories that have been retold at length across many generations of regulars.

Beyond these two competing central narratives, other reported figures include two children and a man seen sitting in what visitors and investigators have taken to calling Room 214. The building's own status as a going trading concern has shifted repeatedly over the years, in step with the wider decline of Attercliffe's old pub trade, but its ghost stories, contested and inconsistent as they are, have consistently outlasted every change of ownership and use.
