The Straw Test at the Avoch Well

A well in the parish of Avoch, Black Isle

Traditional; reported as used in the 19th century

Maclennan, one of Mackenzie's informants, said he knew people who had tried it. He himself had once been near death, got some of the water, and recovered, though he does not claim the well caused it. He added that the water pleased him.

Divination wells of this sort are widespread in the Highlands, usually with the outcome shown by a floating object or a fish. The well is not named in the sources I read, so it is placed at the parish. Mackenzie also records a prophecy for the Lady Hill at Avoch, that a white collar would one day be put upon its brow, taken to mean the drive later built round it.
