Beaumanor Hall

Woodhouse, near Loughborough

House built 1842-1854; haunting reports undated, televised in 2018

Beaumanor Hall was built for the Herrick family between 1842 and 1854, and its 34 acres of grounds at Woodhouse, near Loughborough, have since seen the house through several quite different chapters, including a genuinely significant Second World War role as a signals intelligence site, work that would have brought a very different kind of tension and secrecy into these same Victorian rooms decades before any ghost story attached itself to them. Today the hall operates as an events and education venue, its long institutional life continuing in a gentler form.

Its best known ghost story concerns a coachman said to have hanged himself in the attic of the hall, a death that has left, according to staff, a lingering presence still reported wandering the building, most distinctively as the sound of heavy boots marching through rooms that are, whenever the sound is heard, otherwise completely empty. Separately, the main dining room carries its own reputation for poltergeist-style disturbance, including at least one specific account of a plate lifting from the table and smashing on the floor with no one else in the room at the time.

The hall's reputation reached a considerably wider audience when the ITV series Most Haunted filmed an episode there in 2018, bringing both the coachman and the dining-room stories to viewers who would otherwise never have heard of Beaumanor at all. That television exposure has not added any firmer documentary basis to either story, and as with many country-house hauntings that owe part of their fame to televised ghost-hunting, the coachman and the flying plate are best read as long-standing local reputation, dramatised for broadcast, rather than independently verified incidents in their own right.

Beaumanor Hall is an events and education venue, with access via booked events including ghost hunts.
