Hauntings

The two cricketers of the A5

Also known as: Phantom cricketers

A5 between Markyate and Dunstable

Undated; reported 2007

This is one of the ghosts listed in "It's rush hour for ghosts on our roads!", a feature in Luton Today on 5 November 2007 that Mysterious Britain quotes. It says unexplained sightings include the lost spirits of two cricketers who wander along the A5 between Markyate and Dunstable, heading towards the Packhorse pub. They are thought to have been killed in a road accident while returning from a cricket match.

The A5 here is the old Roman Watling Street and runs along the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire boundary. The Packhorse pub is at Markyate, which is on the Hertfordshire side, so the story straddles the county line. The pin is on the Dunstable side of the road on the stretch where it runs into Bedfordshire.

The short account gives no date for the accident, no names for the men and no witnesses. It is a typical road ghost, a tale that explains where phantom walkers on a major road came from, and it is tagged accordingly.

A busy trunk road; do not stop to look.
