The Higgins, Bedford: bowler hat man and the stable boy

Also known as: Cecil Higgins Art Gallery ghosts

The Higgins Bedford, Castle Lane

Reports from the late 20th century onward; dates not given

The Higgins Bedford is built around the Victorian house of the Higgins family, who made their money from a brewery, and opened as an art gallery in 1949. It stands in Castle Close beside the surviving mound of Bedford Castle.

Spooky Isles, summarising the building's reputation, says there have been reports over the years of cold spots in a toilet and in a bedroom, and of poltergeist activity. It lists three apparitions: a man dressed in the style of the 1930s and wearing a bowler hat, a second man in a dark suit, and a stable boy who walks around the library.

The article gives no dates, witnesses or investigators for any of these reports. That makes this a thin, single-source entry: a building with a rumoured cast of characters rather than a single dated incident. It is included because the three descriptions are specific, even if their origin is not recorded.

The gallery and museum are open to the public; check current opening times.
