The Phantom Swordsman of Coal Pit Fields

Coal Pit Fields, Bedworth

Coal Pit Fields in Bedworth has, over the years, produced a striking and specific report: a short man dressed in full Cavalier costume, a sword worn at his side, described by more than one witness as carrying a faint but distinct green glow as he moves, an unusual and consistent enough detail to set this apparition apart from the more generic costumed figures reported elsewhere.

Warwickshire genuinely saw real fighting during the Civil War of the 1640s, most famously at the Battle of Edgehill in the south of the county, a documented, large-scale engagement that has left its own mark on the region's ghost lore for centuries since. It is that real history the Coal Pit Fields swordsman seems to be borrowing from, even though no specific skirmish, death, or documented event has actually been traced to this particular site; the connection is one of period costume and general historical plausibility rather than any confirmed local incident.

This is a common enough pattern in English ghost lore more broadly, a costumed apparition drifting loosely toward the nearest well-known historical conflict even where the actual site itself has no direct, provable connection to it. The Bedworth swordsman is recorded here honestly on those terms: a vivid, consistently described figure, glowing green sword and all, set against a genuinely turbulent regional history that nonetheless stops short of confirming any specific event at Coal Pit Fields itself.
