In June 1989 a house on Beechmount Grove in west Belfast was the centre of a widely discussed haunting. The father and mother and their five children, aged from five to fifteen, began to see the ghost of a woman in a Victorian black dress. Doors opened and closed by themselves, furniture was moved, and there were banging sounds. The father said he was pushed by an invisible attacker and thrown over the banisters.
Local and national press took up the case and several attempts were made to quiet the house. Religious objects placed around it seemed to anger the woman in black. A Mass was said in the home, and the priest reportedly felt a hostile presence. Rather than easing, the activity intensified, and neighbours began to have strange experiences in their own homes. The family eventually left. Research found no cause and no figure connected with the house or the land. Some people claimed the family made it up to get a larger house, but the property was one of the largest on the estate and they had lived there without trouble before.
The estate was demolished in the early 2000s. The family is not named here.
