Scottie Shoe of the Grand Central Hotel

Grand Central Hotel, Royal Avenue, Belfast (demolished)

First World War period

The Castle Court Shopping Centre opened in 1990 on the site of the Grand Central Hotel on Royal Avenue. The hotel was said to be haunted by a gas fitter who had died in the building, and the ghost was called Scottie Shoe.

According to a report, he appeared to William Jenkins, a British Army officer, when the hotel was in army use during the First World War. Alone in his quarters, Jenkins saw the figure moving towards him and knew it was a ghost because its legs were partly through the floor. He screamed and ran, and other soldiers found him cowering at the foot of the stairs.

No further encounters are known since the hotel was demolished. The part-way-through-the-floor detail is a common sign in ghost stories of a building whose floor level has changed.
