Hauntings

The Merchant Hotel and Robert Grimshaw

The Merchant Hotel, Skipper Street, Belfast

2006

The Merchant Hotel opened in 2006 in the former Ulster Bank headquarters on Skipper Street, built about 1860. In 2006 the Daily Mirror reported that a pop singer left her five-star suite after saying she had seen a ghost, and was moved to another room. The hotel said it was the first time a guest had been spooked.

The spokesperson said that if any place in the building were haunted it might be linked to Robert Grimshaw, one of the former directors of the Ulster Bank, who fell to his death down the building's steps shortly after it opened in 1860.

The story rests on a single press item and a hint from the hotel, so it is a thin report.

The hotel is open to guests and diners.
