The Lamplighter of the Pound Loney

Pound Loney, off Divis Street, Belfast

Late nineteenth and early twentieth century (as told)

The Pound Loney was a small lane running off Divis Street towards Durham Street. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it was lit by gas lamps tended by a lamplighter, who patrolled the narrow streets lighting and putting out the lamps.

According to local tradition recounted in Belfast ghost-story archives such as Rushlight Magazine, after his death the townspeople claimed his spirit continued his duty. His ghost is said to walk the same lanes after dusk, pausing to light a lamp or ensuring it is alight, and some say you can hear his footsteps or see a dim glow where the lamp glass once reflected his torch.

There is no record of his name, the date or the manner of his death, and the story lives in oral tradition.
