St Patrick's Church on Donegall Street in Belfast is the subject of a long-standing story about the spirit of a priest who reportedly died in the middle of a Mass. His ghost would sometimes appear at the altar, and ask whether anyone would help him complete the unfinished service. Most who saw him fled in fear.
One courageous person is said to have stayed and helped the ghost finish. When the final blessing had been given, the priest looked deeply peaceful and satisfied, and vanished. He was never seen again.
The tale has no named priest or date. Its shape, in which a spirit is released by someone completing what the living could not, appears in many parts of Britain and Ireland.
