The Beast of Bennachie

Also known as: Bennachie big cat

Bennachie and surrounding Garioch

1990s

The claims are reported rather than tested. Wikipedia's article on British big cats explains that experts and the British government reject the existence of a breeding population of big cats for lack of convincing evidence, and that distant sightings are often domestic cats. The researcher in the Press and Journal interview believes most exotic cats were released by owners after the Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976, but thinks the large black Kellas cat, a wildcat hybrid, may account for many sightings.

Bennachie, with its Mither Tap summit, is a popular walking hill in the Garioch.
