The miser miller of Easthampstead

Mill pond, Easthampstead

17th century

Berkshire History's Easthampstead entries include a mill pond story from the 17th century. During a famine the miller is said to have refused to help starving local people.

When a beggar he had turned away died on his doorstep, the story says, nothing went right for the miller and his family. The disturbances ended only when the mill burned down.

No names or dates are given beyond the century, and it is not clear whether the story describes a curse proper or a ghost. It is recorded as a misfortune legend. The pin is a general estimate for the Easthampstead mill pond.
