Captain Purvis of Watlington House

Watlington House, Watlington Street, Reading

Undated; former Peninsular War officer

Berkshire History's collection of local ghost stories records an apparition at Watlington House in Reading, identified as Captain Edward Purvis, who had served in the Peninsular War. The summary gives no date for his death or for any sighting.

He is described as appearing in a window in his red military jacket, smoking a pipe, a habit said to date from his campaigning days. The attic is reported to have an oppressive atmosphere at night.

A haunted places directory also lists Captain Purvis at Watlington House, but it adds nothing to this account. The story is one local tradition with no named living witness, so it is tagged as traditional.

Seen from the street only; check current use of the building.
