The Boots, the Rider and the Monk at the Binns

House of the Binns, near Linlithgow

Undated reports

The Haunted Places page for West Lothian lists House of the Binns as the only haunted place in the county, with a former owner who boasted about poker victories seen on horseback and a phantom monk. The former owner is General Tam Dalyell, who in legend beat the Devil at cards.

A newspaper retelling says the general's cavalry boots were said to march round the house on their own at night, and that after Tam's death his third son John took the boots to his home at Lingo in Fife but had to return them to the Binns. Wikipedia says the general's boots are still kept at the house.

The monk has no story in the sources consulted. The boot tale in particular is the kind of legend that accumulates around an object on display and is presented here as tradition.

House of the Binns is a National Trust for Scotland property with limited seasonal opening.
