The Norse-patterned crop circle of 2015

Field near Blandford Forum

May 2015

The formation's reported resemblance to Viking-era Norse art is an unusually specific stylistic detail among crop circle reports generally, most formations described in more abstract geometric or mathematical terms, such as the separately recorded Julia set formation at Stonehenge, Wiltshire, rather than in reference to any identifiable historical art tradition, and no explanation for a Norse connection to this part of Dorset has been traced in the sources consulted for this entry.

Dorset's own coastline did experience genuine Viking raiding activity during the early medieval period, the county recording some of England's earliest documented Viking incursions, and while no direct connection between that history and this crop circle's design has been established, the coincidence gives the formation a locally resonant, if almost certainly unintended, historical echo.

This formation joins the separately recorded 2014 Hod Hill crop circle as one of two individually documented modern Dorset crop formations within this register, both considerably more recent than the county's own share of the wider 1990s South West English crop circle wave recorded in far greater density across the Wiltshire chalklands.

The specific field is private agricultural land.
