The Hunchbacked Maid of a Clifton House

A large house in Clifton (unlocated)

Early 20th century

K J Milsom's roundup of Bristol ghosts describes a haunting in a large Clifton dwelling that was said to have been inspected by the paranormal writer Montague Summers (1880 to 1948).

The ghost was a young hunchbacked girl who had spent a tormented life in the house working as a maid. When a family bought the property in the early twentieth century they met her throughout the house, always in a dirty pink dress and with a smirk. Once a daughter chased her to an empty lower room, then saw her pale floating head grinning in a window some thirty feet above the ground. The family soon left and later occupants reportedly fared no better.

The article gives no street, owner or date and does not cite where Summers wrote it up. Summers is known for his supernatural writing, but I have not been able to find the case in a source I can read. The pin is therefore a general Clifton location and the story is a single secondhand report.
