The Devonshire Dome, Buxton

Devonshire Road, Buxton

Built 1779; hospital use 20th century

The Devonshire Dome's history is an unusually varied one even by the standards of grand Georgian buildings that have been repurposed several times over. Built in 1779 to house the Duke of Devonshire's horses, in a building elegant enough to make clear this was no ordinary stable block, it was later converted into a hospital, a use that has left the strongest mark on its current ghost story, before finding its present role as part of the University of Derby's Buxton campus.

The reported haunting centres on a young nurse said to have died at the building during its time as a hospital, an identity that fits naturally with the setting even though no specific name or date has survived with the story. Reports include footsteps with no visible source, figures glimpsed dressed in old-fashioned nursing uniform, other unexplained noises, and a persistent feeling among some visitors of being watched. As with a number of Buxton's smaller haunted sites, the story sits closer to a general atmospheric tradition tied to the building's genuine hospital past than a documented case with named witnesses, but it is a real and repeated piece of local reporting nonetheless.

Part of the University of Derby's Buxton campus; access depends on current site use.
