The Two Nuns of Drumalla House

Drumalla House, near Garron Point, Carnlough (demolished)

Summer 1967

In the summer of 1967 two friends walking past Drumalla House, a fine old house near Garron Point on the Antrim coast, saw two nuns moving quietly in a walled vegetable garden behind it. The gate was locked and only the gardener had the key, so no visitor could have got in. The friends told the lady of the house, who insisted no nuns had been in the garden.

Days later one of the same spectral women is said to have appeared inside the house, gliding through a room and vanishing. Local tradition ties the apparitions to Garron Tower, a baronial house built in 1850 for the Marchioness of Londonderry and later St MacNissi's College, a Catholic boys' boarding school with a chapel. Some storytellers suggest the Tower's Catholic past drifted outward to nearby houses.

Spirited Isle says no one can say whether the women were nuns from Garron Tower or older memories in the land.
