Carreg Bica, the Giant's Tooth

Carreg Bica, Llangrannog beach

Llangrannog is a small village squeezed into a steep valley where it meets the sea on the Ceredigion coast, with a sandy beach watched over by a tall pointed stack of dark rock, Carreg Bica.

The village explanation is a giant. Bica lived in these parts long ago, and one day he had a raging toothache. The pain was so bad that he spat out the offending tooth, and it landed on the beach at Llangrannog, where it still stands.

The name has a simpler explanation. The Welsh word pica means pointed, and with a feminine noun like carreg, a stone, it becomes bica, so Carreg Bica means the pointed rock. The rock itself is a stack of Ordovician rock left standing as the sea wore the cliffs back. The giant is a much better story.

Carreg Bica stands on the public beach at Llangrannog, reachable at low tide.
