The Jilted Bride of the Castle Hotel, Castleton

Castle Street, Castleton

Undated

Castleton sits directly below the ruins of Peveril Castle, and the village's own Castle Hotel has built up a modest haunted reputation of its own alongside the more famous ghost stories attached to the castle and Winnats Pass nearby. Its best-known reported figure is a bride, said to have been jilted at the altar, seen wandering the hotel's minstrel gallery still dressed for a wedding that, in the story, never actually happened.

A second and apparently unconnected haunting is reported in the hotel's cellar, where a nurse has reportedly been seen, though nothing in the available sources explains who she might have been or links her story to the jilted bride upstairs. Both figures are reported without a firm date or documented historical event behind them, and the hotel's ghost tradition reads as the kind of accumulated, loosely connected local lore that builds up around any old coaching-era building in a heavily visited village like Castleton, rather than a single well-evidenced case.
