A local man was walking home through Castlewellan on a clear moonlit night and took a shortcut through the old graveyard. Among the headstones he heard a faint, repeated chipping sound, as if someone were striking stone. He followed it and found a lone figure hunched over a headstone, chiselling at its surface.
He called out and asked what the figure was doing there so late. The figure straightened and said in a low voice, 'They have spelled my name wrong.' The man noticed that it looked too pale and still, with no tools, no footsteps and no breath, and he ran. He is said to maintain that it really happened, and some people say the tap of a chisel can still be heard in the graveyard on quiet nights.
