The Cheapside Street Fire

Cheapside Street

28 March 1960

The Cheapside Street fire holds an unwanted but well-documented distinction: it remains, more than six decades on, the worst peacetime disaster in the history of British fire services. On the evening of 28 March 1960, fire broke out at a whisky bonded warehouse on Cheapside Street, close to the Clyde, and firefighters and salvage corps personnel were sent in to fight the blaze and protect what could be saved of the building's contents. As the fire took hold, the structure gave way without sufficient warning, and the collapse killed 14 firefighters and 5 members of the salvage corps in a single catastrophic event — a death toll on a scale that reshaped fire safety practice and building-collapse risk assessment across the UK fire service for years afterwards.

The dead were recovered from the rubble in the aftermath and were later laid to rest together, not scattered across separate family plots, in a dedicated fire service tomb in Glasgow Necropolis — the same grand Victorian cemetery covered elsewhere in this register for its Lady in White and its towering John Knox monument, now also serving as a permanent shared resting place for the city's fallen firefighters. Firefighter James Dunlop, who survived the collapse, was recognised for his bravery during the incident with the George Medal, one of Britain's highest civilian gallantry awards. The tragedy is still formally marked every year: a memorial service takes place on 28 March, the anniversary of the fire, attended by serving firefighters and representatives of Glasgow City Council, at a monument whose reverse side was later inscribed to also commemorate firefighters lost in the 1972 Kilbirnie Street fire, linking Glasgow's two worst peacetime fire service losses on the same stone.

Cheapside Street is a public street; the fire service memorial itself stands in Glasgow Necropolis.
