The Comrie Flambeaux

Comrie village centre

Annual, on Hogmanay

The purpose given is to cleanse the village of evil spirits before the new year begins. The origin claim is a supposition, and the ceremony is best treated as a living custom with a folk explanation attached. Comrie also sits on the Highland Boundary Fault and is called the Shaky Toun for its many small earth tremors, which have no supernatural side in the sources.
