The burning is recorded history and the ballad is a real literary survivor of it. The haunting is a later tradition. About Aberdeen says the Forbes family held the castle in a feud with the Gordons, that the men and male servants were away, and that the lady refused to surrender, so the Gordons set fire to it. Screams have since been heard, especially in the barrack room.
