Witchcraft

Marion Maguate, Folk Healer of Coulter, 1640

Coulter

14 May 1640

The entry is thin but the characterisation is useful, because it puts her among the cunning folk and healers who made up a large share of Scottish cases, not among those accused of harming neighbours. Coulter is a small Clyde valley parish beneath Tinto and this is one of the few witch entries recorded for it. The name is given in modern spelling.
