The tale was printed by George Douglas in Scottish Fairy and Folk Tales (1901) and is quoted in full on the Mysterious Britain page for Culzean. Douglas gives no informant and no date. The story belongs to a widespread group of fairy tales in which a kindness to a small being is repaid later, with the fairy or dwarf speaking in rhyme, and it is not tied to any real laird.
The 'Co' or coves are the sea caves beneath the castle, the same caves in which the piper legend places his last walk.
