The Green Lady of Dirleton Castle

Also known as: Green Lady of Dirleton

Dirleton Castle

Undated reports

Dirleton Castle stands in the village of Dirleton and was held in turn by the de Vaux, Halyburton and Ruthven families. Two tourism sources refer to its ghosts in general terms. Visit East Lothian writes of spectral knights and mysterious sounds within the medieval walls. A VisitScotland page on haunted castles says Dirleton has its own Green Lady ghost.

Neither gives a story for her. Green Ladies are a common label in Scottish ghost lore and the name here may simply have been applied to the castle's garden setting. Treat this as a local reputation with no recorded first hand account behind it.

The castle's real dark chapter is the 1649 witch examinations held in its Great Hall, which have their own entry.

Dirleton Castle is a staffed Historic Environment Scotland site with an entry charge.
