The Ghosts of Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle, near Stonehaven

Reports undated

The VisitAberdeenshire and About Aberdeen accounts differ in detail. VisitAberdeenshire puts the woman in green tartan in the Bakery looking for her lost children and vanishing by the Brewery, and the man in military regalia. About Aberdeen places a young girl in a dull green dress in the brewery and describes a tall Scandinavian figure entering the guardroom. The deerhound and the meeting noises are given in both.

The castle has a violent real history, from Viking and Scottish sieges to the 17th century, which makes it an obvious setting for ghost stories, but none of the reports has a dated witness. The tale that William Wallace burned a church full of English prisoners here is recorded by the medieval poet Blind Harry and is not reliable history.

Steep steps and a long path from the car park.
