The Nursemaid of Duntulm

Duntulm Castle, Trotternish

Undated legend; castle abandoned about 1732

Spooky Scotland adds that the nursemaid's ghost is heard screaming hysterically at the ruin. The story is a common type in Hebridean castle tales.

The legend does not match the documented history, because the castle was given up about 1732 when Sir Alexander MacDonald built Monkstadt House five miles south and took stone from Duntulm. The nursemaid story is better read as a tale told to account for the ruin.

The ruin is unsafe, with major masonry falls as recently as 1990; view it from the path.
