The story is a version of the Black School tale, told across Scotland and Europe, here attached to the Mackay lords of Reay. The legendary wizard should not be confused with Donald Mackay, 1st Lord Reay (1591 to 1649), a soldier and member of parliament, though the two share a name. The Scotsman and several tourist sources tell the cave episode. Wikipedia's article on the cave itself covers only its geology and archaeology.
