The White Lady of Eardisland

Eardisland

Eardisland is generally reckoned one of the prettiest of Herefordshire's black-and-white villages, the kind of picturesque, well-preserved setting that draws visitors for its architecture alone, and its ghost story is correspondingly understated compared to the county's more dramatic hauntings: a woman dressed in white, never identified by anyone who has reported seeing her, seen walking calmly through the village carrying what more than one separate witness has specifically described as a proud, almost arrogant expression on her face.

No name, no era, and no backstory of any kind is attached to her anywhere in the available record, a genuine absence that sets her apart from most white lady legends found elsewhere in England, which usually carry at least some fragment of tragic biography, a lost love, a fatal fall, something to explain why she walks. Eardisland's White Lady offers nothing of the kind, only her white dress and that consistently noted proud expression.

She is catalogued entirely separately from the much more violent entity said to haunt Eardisland's old bridge over the same River Arrow, and the two figures are never connected in any source consulted for this entry, despite both belonging to the same small, picturesque village, two quite different kinds of strangeness sharing one settlement without any apparent relationship between them.
