The Red-Capped Fairy Dogs of East Baldwin

Small glen in the East Baldwin valley, Braddan

When he was a lad, the old man said, he and a companion were walking through the East Baldwin valley on a fine moonlight night. As they passed a small gill they heard something moving in it. They went to look.

There were small creatures there, like little dogs, and they were wearing red caps. As soon as the boys came near, they ran off down the glen and were lost in the darkness.

That is all there is to it. Moore's other fairy-dog story, of a fisherman followed home by them, is not placed anywhere, but this one is.

East Baldwin is reached by minor public roads; the specific gill is not identified.
