Mike Covell, a Hull historian and paranormal researcher, wrote about the Dram Shop in a 2015 article for Spooky Isles. It is a small corner pub on George Street with a round bar in the middle of the room. The building dates from 1894, but a wine and spirit merchant stood on the site from at least 1882 and a tea dealer from 1806.
He reports three kinds of activity. Some years before, female staff said an unseen male presence would slap and pinch them on the bottom. On another occasion, when the landlord was closing up, his wife asked who the woman was on the CCTV sitting in the bar. He said there was no woman in the bar. She replied that there was one, sitting near him and laughing. During a photo shoot with the landlord, Covell and he also heard numerous knocks and taps in the cellar, which has a damp tunnel, and once heard metal barrels moving, though all were found in place.
Covell notes from the records that a married couple who worked and lived on the site, Elizabeth and Thomas Gelson, died there in 1838 and 1840, and idly wonders whether they could be the pincher and the laughing lady. That is a speculation, not evidence. The stories come from the landlord and staff via one writer, so this is a single-report haunting. The pin is on George Street and is approximate.
