The Hidden Child of Spar Cave

Spar Cave, Strathaird (position approximate)

Legend of the ninth century; Scott 1814

That is the story behind the Gaelic name Slochd Altimen, which is translated as the nursing cave. The cave was admired by Sir Walter Scott, who visited it in 1814 and wrote of it in The Lord of the Isles, having to use a rope to climb past the wall that guarded it.

The ninth-century date and the Gaelic name were not checked against an older source, so the legend is held at traditional confidence.

The cave is a tidal sea cave reached by a scramble along the shore; take advice before going.
