The Balclevie Curse on Elie House

Elie House and the Lady's Tower, Elie

1760s to 1770s; house sold 1853

Lady Janet, Thomas Carlyle's coquette and beauty, is also remembered for bathing in the sea at Ruby Bay from a purpose built circular Lady's Tower, with a servant ringing a bell to keep locals away. A modern blog notes that later restoration of Elie House suffered lead theft, developer bankruptcy, dry rot and other problems, and that some blamed the curse or Lady Janet's spirit, and that a priest blessed the house by proxy.

The curse is legend, and the six generation count fits the family history after the fact.

Elie House is privately owned; the Lady's Tower at Ruby Bay can be seen from the shore.
