Father Allan MacDonald's 'Strange Things'

Eriskay (the priest's house)

1890s

The collection is described as the only surviving body of material connected with an unfinished enquiry carried out on behalf of the Society for Psychical Research, in which Goodrich Freer took part. The book examines tradition, folklore, manipulation, charlatanism and fraud in the Hebridean supernatural of the time. Father Allan (1859 to 1905) was a Gaelic poet, priest and prolific collector who died on Eriskay.

This record does not reproduce any single story from the collection, since the publisher's description used here does not do so. It is included as a pointer to the best known Gaelic source for ghost and second-sight lore of South Uist and Eriskay, and a warning that the surrounding inquiry was controversial.
