The Bargarran estate lay in the parish of Erskine, between Bishopton and Erskine Ferry. The whole case is said to have hinged on a small domestic quarrel and the angry words that followed it. Later retellings treat Campbell's remark as the moment the curse passed from a servant's temper into the accusation that cost seven lives.
The exact words come from later narrative accounts of the case, so they should be taken as the traditional wording rather than a verbatim record.
