The Bare-Chested Men at Crom, 1992

Crom Estate, Upper Lough Erne

1992

The Crom Estate is a National Trust property on the shore of Upper Lough Erne, with islands, old woodland and the ruins of an older castle. The Great British Ghost Tour credits Sian Evans's book on National Trust ghosts with an account from 1992 in which a man describes a group of bare-chested, heavily armed men in unusual, rough woven clothing. After a moment the figures vanished. The tour page wonders aloud whether they were remnants of long-dead Celts, which is a guess and not part of the report.

Fermanagh Lakelands tells the same story with more setting: a couple exploring the lough by rowing boat had landed at Inishfendra, where the husband saw the men. It identifies the spot as a votive stone where offerings were once made. Spirited Isle repeats the sighting without the setting and adds a ghostly woman standing alone on the shore.

There is no name for the witness and the clothing described is a fairly generic idea of ancient dress, so the record is best taken as one reported experience that has been retold since.
