The Soldier and the Weeping Woman of Enniskillen Castle

Enniskillen Castle, Enniskillen

Undated

Enniskillen Castle stands on the River Erne. It is traditionally said to have been built about 1428 by Hugh Maguire, and later saw sieges and the Williamite war before becoming a military barracks. It now houses the Fermanagh County Museum and the Inniskillings Museum.

Spirited Isle says a lone soldier in a faded military uniform is said to patrol the battlements at dusk, taken to be a loyal guard who died in a siege. Near the old prison cells, visitors are said to have heard the soft crying of a woman whose identity is unknown, whom some think was the wife or mother of a soldier who never came home. Staff and visitors have reportedly heard unseen chains, heavy boots in empty corridors and low voices when no one is around, and have glimpsed shadowy figures slipping across doorways.

No date or named witness is given for any of it. The entry reads as a gathering of the ordinary reputation of the castle rather than a set of recorded encounters.
