In his chapter on the Picts and their brochs, John Spence argued that Finnish adventurers were the first people in Shetland, and pointed to place names as evidence. Among them are Finnigirt and Finnie in Fetlar. He noted that the places are linked in the public mind with trolls, or at least with something uncanny.
He quotes Dr Jakobsen on Finnigirt: there are a few legends told about places along this dyke stead, and the spot where it ends on the south side of the island was of old a noted place for trolls.
The pin is placed on the Fetlar head dyke that modern maps call Funzie Girt. I am assuming that is the same dyke, which fits the name, but I have not seen it stated in the sources. Spence's Finn theory is a nineteenth-century idea and is not accepted now, so the record is about the folklore and the name only.
