The Man in 1920s Dress, Gate Studios

Gate Studios site, Borehamwood

Studios operated 1928-early 1950s; sightings reported through to 2003 demolition

Borehamwood's identity as one of the historic centres of the British film industry, home to a cluster of studios through much of the twentieth century, gives it a distinctive flavour of haunting compared with the county's older manor houses and coaching inns: a ghost story rooted in production crews and maintenance staff rather than aristocrats or highwaymen. Gate Studios operated in the town from 1928 through to the early 1950s, and in the years before its eventual demolition in 2003, workers there repeatedly reported the same recurring figure.

According to the Elstree and Borehamwood Museum, witnesses consistently described a smart, tall, bearded man in his forties or fifties, dressed in a white shirt and black trousers in a style that evoked the 1920s, appearing at various points around the building. His appearances were consistently accompanied by a sudden cold blast of air, a detail reported independently by more than one witness. On one occasion he was seen in a corridor wearing a long jacket, watched by a witness who described him simply fading away rather than vanishing abruptly. His behaviour was interpreted by some who encountered him as protective in nature, as though he were guarding something specific within the building, though nothing further has been established about what that might have been or who he was in life.

The most detailed single sighting comes from 2003, shortly before the studios were finally demolished, when a maintenance engineer working near the building's cinema screen caught a shadowy figure out of the corner of his eye. He watched it walk up a gangway and disappear behind piles of foam stored nearby; when he went to investigate, expecting to find a colleague, there was no one there. With the physical site now demolished and redeveloped, this haunting exists only in the accumulated testimony of the studio workers who reported it, a distinctly modern and industrial addition to the county's ghost lore.

Gate Studios has been demolished; the site has been redeveloped.
