Hauntings

The German Underground Hospital, La Vassalerie

Also known as: German Military Underground Hospital

German Underground Hospital, La Vassalerie, St Andrew

Built during the Occupation (1940 to 1945); reports into the 2020s

The tunnels are cold, damp and very long, and the unfinished sections run off into darkness. It is not hard to see why visitors feel uneasy there, and the site's history supplies a reason for a haunting. Forced labourers, many of them prisoners of war, dug the complex under harsh conditions, on rations that PIGS describes as "watery vegetable soup, bread and a piece of sausage".

The reports gathered by PIGS are wide-ranging. A "lady in white" is the one most often named, seen in the unfinished parts of the tunnel system. Others describe German soldiers, hospital patients and nurses, children, and a dog. The sounds are more commonly reported than sightings: footsteps behind visitors in the dark corridors, marching from near the entrance, breathing and whispering close to the ear. Some people say their clothing has been pulled. PIGS held investigation nights in June, August and October 2019 and in October 2023.

These are reports from paying ghost-hunt guests and visitors, gathered and published by the group running the events, and they should be read that way. Visitor reviews also call the building "very creepy". The deaths and forced labour are documented history. The ghosts are modern belief built on top of them, and this record is tagged accordingly. The hospital is open to visitors in season.

Open to visitors in season; ghost-hunt events are run separately.
