The fairy under the Suck Stone

Also known as: Suckstone

Suck Stone, Highmeadow Woods, near Staunton

Undated tradition

The Suck Stone lies in Highmeadow Woods near Staunton in the Forest of Dean. A blog on the stones of Staunton gives its length as about fourteen metres and says estimates of its weight run from 14,000 to 30,000 tons, which nobody has settled. It may have arrived by landslip or glacial movement.

The same source records a folk legend that a fairy lives beneath it, and that this gives superhuman strength. Forest of Dean heritage pages also list a fairy legend for the Suckstone.

No further detail, such as who was supposed to have gained strength or when the tale was first recorded, was found, so this is a thin traditional entry.
