The Roman Soldiers of the Boar's Head

Site of the Boar's Head public house, Bolton town centre

Reported before demolition in 1999

According to a Greater Manchester ghost listing, the Boar's Head public house in Bolton had a haunting that was unusual even by pub standards. Customers described the figures of Roman soldiers who were visible only from the chest up, and the tramp of marching feet was said to be heard through the building, even when it was closed.

The listing says the pub was demolished in 1999. Archaeologists were allowed on the site and recorded medieval finds and a cellar. The site was then built over and is now occupied by a restaurant called Hogarth's. Nothing in the source connects the finds to anything Roman, so the link between the ghosts and the dig is the compilers' own speculation.

A figure seen from the chest up is often put down to a floor level that has changed over the centuries, and it is a common feature of cellar and old building ghost stories. With a single listing as the only source and no named witnesses, this is tagged as a single report. The pub no longer exists, so there is nothing to visit.

Pub demolished in 1999; site built over.
